Gideon Bean

The first book in the Auras & Embers series introduces readers to a world where some can see the true nature of everyone around them—and where that gift makes you a target.

Synopsis

Gideon Bean has always known he was different. Seeing things—scary, bizarre visions that no one else can see—he’s learned to keep his head down and ignore the strange world around him. It’s safer that way. The last time he reacted to one of his so-called hallucinations, he ended up in a psychiatric hold. He can’t let anything like that happen again.

So he keeps it simple: night shifts burning corpses at Peterson Cremation Services, days at Sheryl’s Shell Shack. Nothing exciting. Exactly how he prefers it.

Then a woman with flaming wings and fiery eyes crawls out of a crematorium oven.

Dacey Menet is a bennu shifter—a Mythical reborn in fire. She’s investigating a series of local murders and disappearances, and she is enraged to have become one of the victims. Now she needs Gideon’s help to catch her killer. Because it turns out his “hallucinations” are real—Gideon Bean can see magic.

Suddenly, Gideon finds himself caught between shadowy organizations that want to exploit his rare ability and a dangerous world he never knew existed. The supernatural underground has its own factions, alliances, and rules—and someone who can see magic is valuable, rare, and hunted.

Now Gideon must learn to navigate this hidden world fast if he wants to survive. And then there’s the fiery, sharp-tongued bennu shifter who seems determined to drag him into the thick of it whether he likes it or not.

What Readers Are Saying

"Gideon Bean is a name to remember! I really enjoyed Ms. DeMarco’s Sophie Feegle series and this new book is in the same world so it has lots of promise. The titular Mr. Bean is a young man who lives with his mom in the Florida panhandle and has two boring jobs and a fear of ever being sent to the mental facility again. Just keeping his head down and his life boring. That is until the night at his job at the crematorium when the woman started banging on the furnace door. The rest is a whirlwind of new introductions to a world he didn’t know existed much less was a part of and a powerful part of at that. A whirlwind case of magic and evil leads to a tumultuous result where he learns he is much stronger than he ever knew. Great opening to what I hope is a short wait to a second book in the series."

"Such a fun book I really enjoyed this. Gideon Bean is a great character. This book takes place in the same world as Sophie Feegle but is situated in the Florida Panhandle rather than San Francisco. Interestingly, Gideon works in a crematorium. Sophie Feegle works in a morgue. I’m sensing some synchronicity with death workers discovering their magical heritage. Gideon is an auramancer. He can sense magical essence. He grew up believing he was human, but an encounter with Dacey, a type of phoenix shifter, started him down his road of magical discovery. Gideon’s acceptance and coming into his power occur in the context of magical serial killings taking place in the area. The mystery was tight and well plotted. The characters were nicely developed and fun to adventure with. Gwen DeMarco is a skilled writer who creates characters and a world you’ll love getting to know. I’m looking forward to a second book to see what happens to Gideon now that he’s getting proper training."

"Delightful! Giddy and Candy are delightful characters. The magic is both new and familiar with just the right blend so you're not list in a sea of unfamiliar terms. It's humorous, lighthearted with some serious overtones. Just a hint of romance. This book tics all my boxes for an enjoyable entertaining read. Highly recommended and I look forward to future books!"
