Behind the ScenesDown the Rabbit Hole: How a Phoenix in a Crematorium Led Me to Some Wild Research
Every book starts with a "what if." For Gideon Bean, it was this: What if a regular, everyday crematorium worker – a guy who's just trying to get through his night shift – unknowingly shoved a phoenix into an oven? The image made me laugh out loud. This poor, unsuspecting dude with his earbuds in, going through his nightly routine of checking paperwork, sliding bodies into the retort, and suddenly: thump thump thump. Something is banging around inside the furnace. And then it kicks the door open. On fire. With wings. I knew immediately that was my book. But to make that moment land, to make the comedy and the chaos hit as hard as possible, everything around the supernatural had to feel completely real and grounded. Which meant I needed to actually understand how crematoriums work. So I did what any good (read: slightly obsessive) author does. I dove headfirst into the world of cremation research. And let me tell you... I found out some wild stuff.
